This is the image for the news article titled New principal announced for Cowpens Middle SchoolDr. Max Deaton has been named principal of Cowpens Middle School (CMS), in Spartanburg County School District Three, effective July 1, 2018.  Deaton is assuming the position previously held by Matt Davis, who is leaving the district.

Deaton is a graduate of USC Spartanburg, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.  He earned his master’s degree from Converse College and his Doctorate from Gardner-Webb University.  Deaton has certifications in elementary, middle level science, middle school social studies, and elementary principal.

Deaton has served as principal at Middle School of Pacolet (MSP) for the past eight years.  He has been with MSP for the past 18 years serving as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal.

“I am very excited about working with the students, teachers, and community at CMS to continue the school’s excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts," stated Deaton.

Deaton is a member of Pacolet Mills Baptist Church and is very active in church and community events such as town clean up days, the Pacolet Indian Festival, and Christmas parade.

Kenny Blackwood, superintendent for the District, commented, “Dr. Deaton brings a wealth of knowledge and a high level of energy to his new leadership positon in our district as the principal of Cowpens Middle School.”
