skip fryeCongratulations to Gettys D. Broome High School's Coach Steven 'Skip' Frye! The school held a ceremony on March 10, 2022 on the new track named in his honor, surrounded by his family, former and current athletes, faculty, administrators, and members of the D3 Community. As part of the ceremony, anyone coached by Coach Frye over the years was invited to come down and pass a ceremonial baton to him.

Coach Frye began teaching in District Three in 1981 before retiring in 2019. He has continued to coach track after close to four decades as a coach at Broome High School. His list of accomplishments is endless. To name a few, he created the cross-country program in 1984 and coached teams that won: four State Championships, six State Runner-Ups, and 22 Region Championships. In cross-country, he paved the way for teams to win more than 20 Region Championships, three State Runner-Ups, and two State Championships.

Frye has won the Region 2 AAA AD of the Year Award multiple times, is a South Carolina Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame member, and was recognized by the South Carolina State House for his accomplishments in 2018 with a House resolution.
He coached 56 individual state champions in track and three individual state champions in cross-country. During his coaching career at BHS, he had 36 male and 23 female All-State runners in cross-country. He was SC Track Coach of the Year four times and State Cross-Country Coach of the Year two times. skip frye track

Thursday's unveiling is a first in District Three history. Because Coach Frye has made such a large impact in our District, the Board of Trustees made an exception for one of its policies so that a living coach can have a facility named in his honor.
