superintendent search updateSuperintendent Search Update: District Three Board Names Top FinalistsAfter narrowing our search down from the well-rounded, large pool of candidates and completing the first round of interviews with five of those candidates, the District Three Board of Trustees is thrilled to announce our two finalists for District Three's next Superintendent: Dr. Julie Fowler and Dr. Ron Garner.

Dr. Julie Fowler is currently a Director, Dispute Resolution Officer, and Liasion for the State Department of Education in South Carolina and currently sits on the Board at Winthrop University. Prior to this position, she was the Superintendent and Chief Administrative Officer of Abbeville County School District. Before that, she was the Deputy State Superintendent for College- and Career-Readiness, Assistant Superintendent of Greenwood County Schools, and Director of Special Services and Student Support Services and Director of Curriculum and Instruction of McCormick County School District. Dr. Fowler began teaching in 1985 and has teaching and leadership experience from preschool through college while working at the following districts and schools: Rock Hill District Three, Albemarle City Schools, Park Ridge School, Cannon School, Noah's Ark Preschool, Greenwood District 50, and Clemson University.

Dr. Ron Garner has served as the Spartanburg School District One Superintendent since 2010 while also teaching at the University of South Carolina in the Upstate since 2021. Prior to this, he was also the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent-Elect in Spartanburg School District One. He has teaching and leadership experience in elementary, middle, high school, and college. Dr. Garner began his educational career in Spartanburg County School District Six in 1994 at Dawkins Middle School, where he taught science and coached basketball and football for five years. His administrative posts included assistant principal and principal at Cowpens Middle School in Spartanburg School District Three. In 2003, Dr. Garner became the principal of L.E. Gable Middle School in District Six. In 2005, he became Chapman High School's principal, where he served for three years.

Over the next few weeks, both candidates will visit each of our schools to meet our students, teachers, and staff. While Superintendent Kenny Blackwood is leaving behind a fantastic, impactful, and groundbreaking legacy that will be impossible to forget, we believe either candidate will continue to lead our District in the best direction, as we remain the best choice for families in South Carolina!
