February Board Meeting Recap

We had several exciting student and staff recognitions at our District Three Board Meeting last night!

First, we recognized and celebrated Gettys D. Broome High School Cadets Emily Buell and Braden Tyler. Emily and Braden were invited to attend Air Force JROTC Flight Academy this summer! An invitation is highly competitive. They were two of the 170 students selected out of nearly 1,200 applicants!

Next, we recognized Emily Buell for earning the United States Air Force’s J-100 Scholarship. This is a full scholarship to attend the school of her choice! She will be commissioned in the US Air Force as a 2Lt when she graduates. This scholarship is very competitive, and the selection process included physical fitness test, academic grades, SAT/ACT scores, an essay, and an extensive online interview by a 3-member board of active duty and retired service members. The J-100 Scholarship is an amazing opportunity and covers 4 years of tuition, room, and board as well as books and a monthly spending stipend! Emily is the first student in D3 history to earn this scholarship!

Next, we moved to staff recognitions where we recognized Mrs. Caroline Gunnells at Daniel Morgan Technology Center. Mrs. Gunnells' Employability Education class at Daniel Morgan Technology Center earned a $500 recycling grant from DHEC. They are using it to expand their recycling efforts within the school. The money has provided each teacher with a new recycling container for plastics as well as one specifically for paper products. Each day, Mrs. Gunnells' 2nd block students visit classrooms and collect recyclables!

We also recognized Mr. Greg Medford and Mr. Robert Sparks. Mr. Medford earned a $3,000 grant from the Mechanical Contractors Association of South Carolina to use in his DMTC Carpentry Course and Mr. Sparks earned a $3,500 grant from the Mechanical Contractors Association of South Carolina to use in his DMTC Electricity Course. They do a phenomenal job equipping their students with the proper tools to succeed. This is not the first time they have earned these grants!

We then recognized Mrs. Summer Carling. She teaches STEAM and Technology at Broome High School and is 1 of 10 teachers in the state of South Carolina invited to attend the Strategies for Teacher Advancement and Renewal Seminar – also known as the STAR Seminar! It will be in Seabrook Island next month. STAR is a biannual reward and recognition program for outstanding South Carolina veteran teachers sponsored by the Foundation for Professional Development and Palmetto State Teachers Association.

Congratulations to these outstanding members of our D3 family! We are proud of you!

After recognitions, we were excited to welcome Dr. Russell Booker, Chief Executive Office of Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM) where he shared SAM's Movement 2030 Initiative, which is focused on advancing economic mobility and educational attainment.

Thank you, Dr. Booker and SAM, for your commitment to our students and community!
