This program, through the South Carolina Department of Education, identifies students with exceptionally high scholastic achievement and intellectual ability and provides summer opportunities in partnership with South Carolina colleges, universities, and the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics.

Next, we recognized Mrs. Tonya McCullough, 4th grade teacher at Cannons Elementary School, who won the Teaching America250 Award for South Carolina through the Jack Miller Center in Philadelphia.

This national award recognizes 51 teachers (one from each state and Washington, D.C.) with a $5,000 grant to support projects that engage students in the history and ideals of America’s founding in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Mrs. McCullough’s project includes visits to Fort Moultrie and Cowpens National Battlefield. Both trips will be free for her students.

She is also one of only 12 teachers nationwide invited to attend the Social Studies Conference in Philadelphia, all expenses paid.

As Director Dr. Nikki Honeycutt shared:

“MCASC’s purpose — ‘To make the industry what it needs to be’ — is not just a statement, but a demonstrated commitment.”

Congratulations to all!
