Yesterday, Cannons Elementary School had the privilege of welcoming students from Wofford College’s Education 200 course. Their visit left students feeling inspired and excited about characteristics that make them special!

Under the leadership of Christie Johnson, Department Chair and Senior Instructor of Wofford’s Education Department, forty-eight of her students spent the semester studying the foundations of teaching and learning. Their culminating project brought them to Cannons.

Wofford students created their own lesson plans based on the book Because I Love Me, written by local author Cynthia Robinson. She opened the visit with a read-a-loud of her rhyming book. Afterward, Wofford students visited several classrooms to teach their hands-on, creative lessons promoting confidence.

They gifted each of those classrooms with a copy of the book.
Cannons Principal Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips and Mrs. Johnson, both proud Wofford College alumni, were excited to see this partnership in action.

We are grateful for this collaboration and the positive impact it had on our students!

Congratulations, Mrs. Melanie Painter!

Mrs. Painter, Math Teacher and Department Chair at Gettys D. Broome High School and our 2024-25 District Three Teacher of the Year, was selected as one of only eight educators from across South Carolina to participate in the Fall 2025 Strategies for Teacher Advancement and Renewal Seminar (STAR). The seminar was held at Seabrook Island on October 20-24, 2025.

STAR is a biannual reward and recognition program for outstanding South Carolina veteran teachers sponsored by the Foundation for Professional Development and Palmetto State Teachers Association. Participants spend the week participating in a book study, taking a tour of historic Charleston, and attending an outdoor session led by a Barrier Island Naturalist. Teachers have the opportunity to reconnect and reflect while collaborating with other educators.

More than 600 educators have participated in STAR Seminars since 1994. Palmetto State Teachers Association started the program to enhance the teachers’ commitment to the education profession and to provide them with opportunities for personal and professional growth. The five-day retreat is funded by private contributions through the Foundation for Professional Development.
